Here we go again. Again.

So, once again I'm determined to start and maintain a blog. Why should this time be any different? Good question. One I hope to answer in the coming weeks and months and years. I have a few ideas that will hopefully help me get a bit more longevity out of this one than I did in previous attempts.

Spread from my 2013 Sketchbook Projet submission.

Namely, I'm going to try to have weekly projects that are directly organized, influenced and carried out through this blog. So, rather than posting things as I make them (which can go through long dry spells), I'll set up some projects that are solely for this blog.

  • First, I plan to steal Jessica Hische's Daily Drop Cap idea. Stumbling upon her lecture for OFFSET 2012, turned me on to her incredible work and definitely had a hand in inspiring this new venture.

I love interesting drop caps and as an art director and illustrator, it's a nice match for me. I'm going to try to do one a week as I think that'll provide enough of a challenge. At some point I'd like to make them usable as she has made hers, but one step at a time.

Also, I plan to make mine a little more fine art, or sketchy maybe as I plan to do most of them by hand and scan them in to display here. But again, we'll see.

  • Next, I'd like to share pages from sketchbooks I happen to be working in at the time. This may include sketches that are building up to some bigger thing, like an art show, or simply doodles I do at every staff meeting.

  • I'd also like to do some kind of contests for you, my as of yet non-existent readers. Some sort of "be the sixth caller" sort of deal, but with comments instead of phone calls and less disc-jockey overtones. Winners of whatever the contest is will receive something handmade by me.

  • Lastly, I've been messing with video and animation and I think I'll include that here as well. I'd like to try to make one short per month, but that's a pretty darn tall order. We'll see. Hold your horses.

Ok, so not all of those are directly influenced or directed by this blog but I couldn't think of any more after the first one and the rest seemed like good ideas in general.

So that's it. Check in for more nonsensical updates and potentially cool art from time to time.

Thanks for stopping by.
